Texas State University TikTok Ban Communication
On December 9, 2022, Texas State faculty, staff, and students received communications regarding Texas State University's compliance with Governor Abbott's order banning TikTok. Below are the two communications sent to the university.
Dear Faculty and Staff,
As you may be aware, data collection algorithms used by the application TikTok have prompted ongoing national security concerns since the app’s launch. To better protect Texas’ information and infrastructure, Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued an order banning the use of TikTok on any state-owned devices. The order also directs each state agency’s IT department to strictly enforce the ban.
Effective immediately, all university faculty and staff are prohibited from downloading or using TikTok on any university-owned or issued devices and other university information resources. The installation or use of TikTok on university-owned or issued devices (mobile devices, tablets, laptops, desktops, and servers) and other university information resources by any user, including contractors, students, and guests, is prohibited.
In accordance with the Governor’s order, the Division of Information Technology has implemented technical measures to ban the use of TikTok on university-issued devices and TXST networks.
To fulfill the order’s requirements, please take the following actions by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, December 12, 2022, for all TikTok accounts representing Texas State University:
-
Review and download copies of any videos you may need for reference or records retention purposes.
-
Remove all institutional branding, such as logos and contact information.
-
Make the profile private.
-
Do not delete the TikTok account at this time.
-
University faculty and staff can find more information on the Standards for Technologies Prohibited by Regulation webpage.
The Information Security Office will continue to monitor developments related to the Governor’s order and keep stakeholders informed of potential impacts.
